How to make a “Baby Yoda” from felt

Guys…..Baby Yoda though? Right? If you haven’t been watching Disney +’s the Mandalorian you haven’t experienced the pure joy and happiness that a miniature Yoda brings. Technically this little one is only referred to as ‘The Child” calling it Baby Yoda would be a little like calling all children Baby Abraham Lincoln. But with a face that is impossible not to love and a line of toys still unreleased I, like every one else (including elite bounty hunters it seems) felt I needed to have one of my own. This DIY Baby Yoda tutorial and template whips up quickly and can be made entirely by hand.

You will need:

9″ x 12″ Baby Yoda colored felt, I used Granny Smith *

4″ x 5″ tan fur felt*

Felt Glue

Doll eyes I used 5mm or black felt* scrap for eyes

Stuffing

Embroidery felt in black or dark green

*Matching thread

Cut:

2 body shapes, 2 head shapes, 2 hand shapes, 1 face detail shape and 1 foot from green felt.

Cut 1 robe and 1 collar and 2 arms from tan fur felt

2 eyes from black felt if you won’t be using doll eyes to make your toy Baby Yoda.

Stitch collar along top of the robe with a running stitch and matching thread, set aside.Fold arms and stitch long sides together with matching thread and an overcast stitch. To make Baby Yoda’s hands. Attach hands inside of sleeves with a drop of felt glue or some small running stitches stitches. You want the fingers to just peek out of the sleeves. Set aside.Place body pieces together and overcast stitch around the outside using matching thread stuff before closing. Wrap robe loosely around body until you are happy with the look, it should swing away from the body to look like it’s over sized not fit tightly. We want our DIY Baby Yoda to be comfortable enough to nap and chase frogs.

Stitch into place and through the body to hold. Attach arms to the shoulders of the robe with a running stitch or two and matching thread. The felt fur is very forgiving so stitches are easy to hide making the arms super easy to attach. Attach Baby Yoda’s foot with felt glue, you can add another if you like but I preferred the look of one little Yoda foot sticking out of the over sized robe.  Set aside to dry.

Mark face detail page and cut holes for plastic eyes if you are using them. Cut holes for eyes in one of the head pieces too so they go through without issues.

Sew or glue nose to face detail and stitch a mouth with 1 strand of embroidery floss.

Sew or glue decorated face detail to the head. Add eyes Attach remaining head piece back to the decorated face and overcast stitch closed with matching thread. Stuff lightly before closing.Place the finished head in front of the neck at an angle and attach with a few running stitches. And viola, you’ve got yourself a Baby Yoda toy you’ve made by hand! Good job you!

Keep the child at your desk, as a pocket Baby Yoda, or give it to the Baby Yoda lover in your life. You can also attach a ribbon or loop and Baby Yoda would make a great felt Christmas ornament or addition to Star Wars themed gift wrap.
