Considering how much of my income goes to shoes and hair care products I am not really sure what mermaids’ spend their money on. But should your little mer-person need a little uh…pocket money these DIY felt sand dollars are the perfect thing. They also make cute hair clips, table decorations, garlands and Christmas ornaments. These easy to make felt sand dollars feature colorful sequined centers for some added sparkle.
You will Need:
Off white felt I used Linen 1- 9″ x 12″ sheet will make 6 felt sand dollars
Colored felt scraps, I used Aqua, Orchid, Lavender and Sprout & matching thread 2″ square per DIY sand dollar
Sequins I used Peacock, Hot Pink and Fuchsia
Scissors, pencil, sewing needle
Begin by folding sand dollar shape in half. and cutting at least 5 shapes out of it. This is really easy to do start the cut where you want the pointed end of your shape to star curve the scissors around to form the rounded part of the shape, repeat as desired.
Place the slightly smaller colored scrap behind the holes and mark areas that show. Cover marks with felt glue and place sequins For more on placing sequins see this post.
Sandwich cut felt with colored felt/ sequins in between and add back piece.*
Using colored tread sew a running stitch along the border.
*It is much easier to place the colored piece onto a small square of felt and place the cut out top over and stitch around before cutting around to create the sand dollars. See template for details.
