DIY Felt Giraffe Tic Tac Toe Tutorial

We’ve just gotten this adorable giraffe print felt in stock in our online shop and I fell in love with it immediately.

I knew I wanted to make a felt Valentine’s day project with it and after some though here’s what I came up with.

Giraffe Tic Tac Toe Felt Toy Tutorial - American Felt and Craft 'The Blog'

I think it’s super sweet but not too valentines-y so you can keep it out year round if you can’t bear to part with your Giraffe friend.

(His name is Winchester by the way. )

The hearts are simple to sew (or at least hard to mess up) and so this makes a great mommy and me sewing craft for you and your little Valentine. And of course you could always substitute the Pink with another color like a bright green like Key Lime Pie or lovely blue like Sparrow if pink isn’t your thing.

Felt Colors

You will need:

2- 9″x 12″ sheets Hot Pink Felt*

2- 9″ x 12″ sheets Giraffe print felt*

1 – 9″ x 12″ sheet pale beige felt Peanut Butter

2 – Sweetheart buttons

* Matching thread (you can use 1 strand of embroidery thread in place of standard thread.)

Embroidery thread in Gold Metallic (Optional and a real pain to work with) Black and  Hot Pink

Giraffe Templates (at the end of post)

Cut

Cut both the Hot pink felt sheets into squares, cut 10 hearts from the remaining hot pink felt.

Cut out  Giraffe shape, Tic Tac Toe Lines, and 10 heart shapes from giraffe printed felt sheets.

Cut Giraffe hooves and pocket pieces from pale beige felt.

Sew

Sew two of the matching felt hearts together with a running stitch and contrasting thread – set aside.

This is an easy felt project for kids to practice beginning stitching.

Felt Tic Tac Toe Tutorial

Giraffe tail

Add tail detail with gold embroidery thread and a few large stitches.

felt hooves

Stitch hooves into place with gold thread and an overcast stitch.  Set aside.

Making the envelope:

Lay small rectangle over larger one and fold remainder over, press with an iron set to the wool setting.

how to make a felt envelope with toggle

Stitch up one side of envelope to hold pieces in together with matching thread and an overcast stitch.

Leave one end open to easily place the toggle clasp.

How to make an envelope toggle

Mark base of the toggle clasp and knot hot pink embroidery thread on both sides of felt to hold toggle in place.

Extend your thread approx 9″   and knot the end.

Place button over the extended thread, fold top down and sew second button into place.

Stitch the rest of the envelope together using an over cast stitch and matching thread.

Valentines Day Box of Chocolates Felt Hair Clip

24 Jan

This one goes out to all you non-sewers out there!

Easy no sew felt hair clip

Will need:

Bright red thick wool felt I used: Cardinal  a few layers of blend felt might work too.

Various Brown felt scraps, all the colors here came from the Chocoholics felt pack

Alligator hair clip

Hot glue gun

Felt Glue

Beads and cross stitching thread (optional)

Templates (at bottom of post)

Cut templates out of corresponding colors.

(for help on cutting small things from felt see: Andie’s Method for cutting small shapes)

You are not allowed to laugh at my stitching one of my New Years Resolutions is to learn proper embroidery stitches. If yours are worse than mine, which is hard to imagine or if you are just in a hurry you can substitute stitching with more beads or just leave the shapes plain.

1. Brown embroidery thread stitched lengthwise

2. Pale Yellow embroidery thread stitched in a zig zag pattern

3. Small bead felt glued

4. White  embroidery thread in an S shape

5. Brown bead glued down

6. Plain

7. Smaller shape felt glued to bigger shape.

Allow these pieces to sit while you cut out the felt heart shape and a strip of felt to cover the perimeter approx 1/4″ inch wide by 9.5″ inches long.

Apply felt Glue to edge of heart shape.

Run Strip of felt along side and pin to hold.

Let everything sit for about an hour.

Remove pins.

Glue chocolates into place, the easiest way to do this is to place a small amount of glue onto the tip of a pin and place the glue onto the heart.

Carefully put the chocolates into their spaces allow to dry for 30 minutes

Turn Clip over and hot glue clip to back

Give to your Valentine

Happy Valentine’s Day!
