Glow in the Dark Edison Bulb Pendant

1 May

EdisonBulb

There is something undoubtedly charming about a vintage Edison bulb. The nostalgic qualities and quirky twists lend a warm vintage feel to an otherwise inanimate and purely industrial object.

The soft, even glow of glow in the dark felt lends itself to these quirky vintage bulbs perfectly for a unique softly industrial nightlight. Hang them in your playhouse kitchen  or pin them to wall these soft bulbs are surprisingly easy to make and oh so cute!

You will need:

12″ x 12″ Glow in the Dark Felt

Grey felt I used Grey Flannel

Black embroidery floss

Sharpie or permanent marker

Stuffing

 3/4″ dowel  12″ long

Cut

2 of each bulb shape from glow in the dark felt

2 of each bulb base from grey felt

bulbCut out two of each of the bulb shapes. Using a pencil trace out the center patterns and when you are satisfied follow over it with a black sharpie marker.

If you plan to hang this on the wall you only need to do this to one side, repeat with the other side if you plan to hang.

bulb2

Stitch over the traced lines with one stand of embroidery thread, not doubled over. Repeat with all the Edison bulbs.

bulb4Place cap on the end of each light bulb and stitch down, I liked the look of these off center and a little quirky so I didn’t trace them out first but if you prefer a more uniform look just trace it out with a pencil followed by sharpie.

bulb5Stitch cap pieces together with matching grey thread.

bulb6Overcast stitch around the outer edges of the bulb stuffing lightly before closing.

Cut strings to desired lengths, here I cut into 12″ 16″ and 24″ inches.

Using a doll needle sew into the top of  the bulb, do not double over the thread.

Bring your loose thread ends together and knot. Tie another knot over the area you sewed through at the top to keep the strands from tangling and the piece well weighted.

American Felt and Craft - Online Craft Store

Repeat with all Edison bulbs.

You should have a a large loop attached to each bulb, this will allow you to slide each bulb onto the dowel and rearrange the order as desired.

If you are hanging the piece from a ceiling or hook you will want to arrange the pieces as desired and affix the top of each loop with a dot of hot glue to keep the breeze from moving the bulbs too much.

Color the dowel black with the black sharpie marker.

Cut a length of cross stitch thread into 30″, double it over and tie down on one end, slide the loops over the dowel and tie down the other side to hang.

Since the fairy is there completely as a friend and is free to leave at any time there is no lid on this glowing bedside jar of magic. This project is surprisingly easy and fast to put together. The toughest part is the cutting the fairy details. For a full rundown on the easiest way to cut felt shapes check out this post: Felt Lab – 5 cutting methods tested or this one: How to cut small or detailed shapes from felt.

Cut glow felt on fold to form one long rectangle, and one top and one bottom from glow felt

Cut 1 fairy from black felt for more on this see Felt Lab- Difficult Shapes.

1Sew fairy to the center of the cut out jar, be sure to place her near the bottom so you have enough room to make the jar top ridges.

2Turn piece so fairy faces inward and overlapping the short end sides of the jar sew down with a running stitch. 3

Sew bottom to bottom (where the fairy’s feet are) 4Turn inside out so the bottom looks rounded and fairy is now showing.

5Fold down top 1″ and around the top with a running stitch. 6Unfold and fold remaining area in half again. Sew down with a running stitch as you did above. 7Unfold and add stuffing. If you want to add stuffing beads  to insure it always stays upright if put a small amount in before adding the stuffing. It won’t take much. Stitch top to jar with an overcast stitch.

Knot each end of the cord and sew to opposite sides. with matching thread.
