There is something undoubtedly charming about a vintage Edison bulb. The nostalgic qualities and quirky twists lend a warm vintage feel to an otherwise inanimate and purely industrial object.
The soft, even glow of glow in the dark felt lends itself to these quirky vintage bulbs perfectly for a unique softly industrial nightlight. Hang them in your playhouse kitchen or pin them to wall these soft bulbs are surprisingly easy to make and oh so cute!
You will need:
12″ x 12″ Glow in the Dark Felt
Grey felt I used Grey Flannel
Black embroidery floss
Sharpie or permanent marker
Stuffing
3/4″ dowel 12″ long
Cut
2 of each bulb shape from glow in the dark felt
2 of each bulb base from grey felt
Cut out two of each of the bulb shapes. Using a pencil trace out the center patterns and when you are satisfied follow over it with a black sharpie marker.
If you plan to hang this on the wall you only need to do this to one side, repeat with the other side if you plan to hang.
Stitch over the traced lines with one stand of embroidery thread, not doubled over. Repeat with all the Edison bulbs.
Place cap on the end of each light bulb and stitch down, I liked the look of these off center and a little quirky so I didn’t trace them out first but if you prefer a more uniform look just trace it out with a pencil followed by sharpie.
Stitch cap pieces together with matching grey thread.
Overcast stitch around the outer edges of the bulb stuffing lightly before closing.
Cut strings to desired lengths, here I cut into 12″ 16″ and 24″ inches.
Using a doll needle sew into the top of the bulb, do not double over the thread.
Bring your loose thread ends together and knot. Tie another knot over the area you sewed through at the top to keep the strands from tangling and the piece well weighted.
Repeat with all Edison bulbs.
You should have a a large loop attached to each bulb, this will allow you to slide each bulb onto the dowel and rearrange the order as desired.
If you are hanging the piece from a ceiling or hook you will want to arrange the pieces as desired and affix the top of each loop with a dot of hot glue to keep the breeze from moving the bulbs too much.
Color the dowel black with the black sharpie marker.
Cut a length of cross stitch thread into 30″, double it over and tie down on one end, slide the loops over the dowel and tie down the other side to hang.
Happy Crafting!
