Gone Fishin’ Felt Bookmarks

23 Jun

kidsfeltproject

These felt bookmarks make a great kids sewing project. The wood “pole” lays flat while the dangling fish hangs from the book. This easy project can be made from felt scraps in most cases.

1

You will need

Brown Felt I used: Chocolate

*Lighter Brown Felt I used:  Toffee

*Green Felt I used:  Cilantro

A Small Amount of Stuffing

Brown Embroidery Thread

2 buttons for eyes (optional)

Light Blue Ric Rac  8″ inches

*Matching Thread

Template (at the end of this post)

stitch

Stitch lines up and down the felt tree “wood” with embroidery thread, this is a great chance for new sewers to practice since it’s practically impossible to goof up. Stitch ovals onto the wood pieces as shown.  Set Aside

2

With large fins facing upward attach the fish eyes making sure the eyes are on opposite sides so the fish can be sewn together later.

3

Sew ric rac onto the inside of one of the fish shapes and one of the stick shapes, 3 stitches should hold just fine.

4

Place fish pieces together and stitch along the outside, stuff lightly before closing.

end

Stitch the pole shapes together. And get to readin’ and fishin’

Felt Sea Urchin Pincushions and Sea Life Pins

13 Jul

DIY felt sea urchin pincushion If you’re going to sew your probably going to need a pin or two and a place to put all of them. These little felt sea urchins certainly fit the bill!

But one word of warning if you start making these you may forget all about sewing until you have covered most of the surfaces in your home with sea urchin pin cushions and hundreds nay thousands of fish, octopi, and seahorses.

Summer sewing never looked so cute!

You will need

1- 9 x 12 sheet felt for urchin in any color you dang well please

(I used, Orchid, Peaches and Cream, Key Lime Pie and Peacock)

Flower shaped buttons (Optional)

Marching thread / Stuffing

Ball Pins to create urchin dots

Long sewing pins- size matters here the longer the better

Craft Glue – I used a product called Amazing Goop

Shrink Film (and low grit sandpaper if needed)

Markers or colored pencils to color fish

Templates (at the end of post)

Pin Cushion

Cut the circles from felt sheet, these guys go together pretty quickly, here’s the rundown.

Easy Sea Urchin Pincushion

1.  Sew around the outer edges with a basting (aka big ole sloppy running) stitch

2.Pull to create a bit of a cup and fill with stuffing.

3.Place smaller circle over the base and overcast stitch into place.

4. Turn over 5. Add flower buttons if desired.

Add ball pins to urchin in a star pattern.

Now for the big finish or fishish (sorry I couldn’t resist)

Sea Life Pins

Begin by prepping the shrink film, some shrink films are ready to go and need no prep otherwise you will need to prep it with a low grit sandpaper.

how to prep shrink plastic

Trace sea templates onto shrink film and color with permanent markers.draw and color sea shapes onto shrink film

Cut out shapes small scissors work best for this. Try to cut away as much of the clear edges as possible.

shink dink fish shapes

Cut out the shapes and heat to shrink as directed. Shrink film shrinks differently depending on brand so your results may vary.

Create Custom Sewing Pins with Shrink Film

Glue fish onto pins with craft glue, I used a product called Amazing Goop – because how can you not use a product called amazing goop!

I found the easiest way to do this is to put a pea sized dollop of goop onto a piece of paper and dip the end of the pin in and then lay onto the backside of the shape.

Let dry as directed and enjoy!

Our new pattern : Gulf Coast Catch features some of the Gulf Coasts’ best offerings. Fish, Shrimp and Clams!!

This pattern was created to specifically to help the animals and fisherman effected by the BP oil Spill. American Felt and Craft has always taken our commitment to protecting our environment seriously. And in an effort to help 100% of our profits from this pattern, EVERY PENNY, will be donated to 2 charities to help those effected by this horrible event. We hope you will join us in helping those effected and we know you will enjoy this beautiful pattern.

The first of the two charities we donate to will be the Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund which focuses  on helping  fishermen and their families but we know that losing livelihoods pales in comparison to the massive loss of life and homes for millions of animals so please join us in selecting the second of the charities we donate the profits to:
