Low sew fall leaf felt pillow

Bring fall indoors with these SUPER easy fall felt pillows. How easy you ask? You don’t even need a sewing machine to create a mountain of fall leaf pillows and there’s a good chance you have everything you need in your house right now.

These pillows make easy and fun fall crafts. It’s surprisingly easy to bring fall in your living room you’ll be jumping in piles of leaf pillows in no time.

You will need:

Standard size pillow case. I used an old standard size bed pillowcase.

Pillow insert, – these work better than stuffing because they create a smooth appearance for your pillows. You can buy them premade or simply chop a bed pillow to your desired size.

Felt scraps to cut leaves in fall colors the number you will need will depend on the design you choose. I used

Saddle Brown, Mustard, Egg Yolk, Hot Chocolate, Fresh Cut Grass, Autumn Leaves, Tangerine, Darkest Ruby, Chocolate, Poinsettia, Wine and Penny

Needle and thread.

First decide on a design you like, as you can see the options for this easy fall felt pillow are endless.

Cut the felt leaves from the leaf shaped pattern template. The number of leaves you will need depends upon the design you choose. If you need some tips on cutting small or difficult shapes check out THIS POST.

I am going to make the striped pillow case but they are all made in basically the same way.  Stuff pillowcase with pillow and fold extra fabric behind the pillow for now.

Mark out where you want your design to be. For the circle shape you can trace a plate if needed but the leaves on this DIY fall decor hack are very forgiving if you want to wing it. Measure out a 3.5″ – 4″  past the end of your pillow and trim off the extra fabric. Lay out your leaves where you’d like them to be. Pin down if desired. Sew felt leaves down with a  few stitches into each with a neutral color or consider using a few permanent markers.  You can attempt this with the pillow in place with small shallow stitches or you can remove the case and sew then sew the felt leaves to your pillowcase.

Small stitches are fine the leaves will flop naturally so there is no need to sew each felt leaf shape down completely.  Continue until your design is sewn down.

Fold cut edges of the pillow case  inward and pin folded ends together. Overcast stitch along the side of the pillow with matching thread to close. 

And that’s all it takes to make a pile of felt fall leaf throw pillows.

Felt Apples – Felt Food Pattern & Tutorial

I don’t know about you but I cannot wait for fall, I feel like after such a long  hot summer  we’ve earned the crisp autumn air and shorter days. Fall may still be a few weeks away but it’s easy to get into the fall spirit when you craft up a few of these felt apples.

Don’t be intimidated. The overcast stitch is the only stitch you need to create a bushel or two of lovely felt apples in a myriad of colors. And because real apples are all different this felt project is pretty fool proof .

While fall and apples are a classic combo, you can make these felt apples any time of year for any reason but I think they look particularly good as a crafty fall display and make a great autumnal addition to any felt food collection.

To make a felt apple

9″ x 12″ – felt sheet apple colored felt. I used Granny Smith, Big Apple, Lipstick and Pear  *

3″ felt scrap in dark brown I used Brownie  *

3″ felt scrap in green I used Cilantro

Doll Needle

Embroidery Thread (brown)

Stuffing

Felt Apple Template (at the end of post)

*Matching thread

Cut

6 apple sections from the felt color of your choice, 1 stem and 1 bottom from brown felt and desired number of leaves from green felt.

Match 2 felt apple pieces together and overcast stitch around one side, making sure the tops and bottoms are lined up correctly.

Overcast stitch around curve.

Leave the ends open for easier turning and a more even piece.

Set aside and repeat with 2 more side pieces.

Overcast stitch the remaining sides making three sets of two sewn pieces.

Fit the pieces together making sure the tops and bottoms are lined up correctly and overcast stitch up the sides with matching thread, repeat with all the sewn apple sides.

When the felt apple is completely sewn together turn so stitching is on the inside.

Stuff with stuffing.

Close up apple top and bottom with an overcast stitch and red thread.

Set aside.

Don’t worry it will still look weird and unapple like.

Make a felt apple stem.

To make stem roll up the felt lengthwise.

Overcast stitch up the side.

Using a doll needle and brown embroidery floss doubled over sew up through the bottom of the apple to the top, put needle through stem base and pull needle back through the apple again.

Thread the brown apple base through the needle and pull back to top of apple to secure the stem from the other side.

Pull gently as you go until the top and bottom dent.

Add leaf or leaves. with a stitch near the base of the stem.

Hide the knot at the base of the stem or under the leaf.

Fall Felt Leaves with Templates

If you have never seen the New England in the fall you’re missing a riot of color. Impossibly bright oranges and yellows fade into russets and mustards. Pops of burgundy, gold, and deep reds tipped in oak and chocolate browns dance among the deep greens of the few leaves yet unchanged.

But I live in the Phoenix metropolitan area so we have like…yellow.
