This creepy cute voodoo doll pincushion is a simple and spooky addition to your sewing basket. Able to hold all the pins you can possibly imagine yet always there with a goofy grin, he’s the ultimate frienemy! I wanted to give mine a bit of a vintage aged feel so I went with a wool blend chai felt, a milky grey beige tone but you can make this felt pincushion in any color of the rainbow. The same applies to buttons, any size or shape will do. This project is truly great for allowing you to use whatever you have on hand and is an easy project for even beginning sewers.

Felt Empanadas (hand pies)

14 Sep

felt empanadas

Popular in Spain and many Latin American countries an empanada prounounced (Em-pan-ah-dah) is a kind of stuffed bread or pastry which is either baked or fried. Fruit empanadas are made by folding dough over a fruit filling and are basically identical to hand pies in that they are both made of deliciousness.

Empanadas can be stuffed with any filling, our felt versions sport an apple, pineapple, cherry and strawberry for variety.

Felt foods don’t get too much easier than this. The most difficult part will be cutting the fruit shapes for your felt empanada for some tips see our post on Cutting Small Shapes. This play food craft is so super easy and is a great for the felt food beginner.

Feeling Star Beanbags

7 Aug

starsYou are the sky- everything else is just the weather.” – Pema Chodron

Identifying feelings is tough for kids (and some adults) understanding feelings are temporary can be even tougher. These shooting star bean bags are designed to help with both. The weighted  bean bags are comforting and the ribbons are prefect for fiddling with. When your child is ready they can simply let go of the feeling and move on.

Great for preschools and toddlers. You can make these in any feeling or color scheme you can dream up. The star bean bags come together quickly and are prefect for developing a strong emotional IQ not to mention they are just plain cute!

s3

You will need:

Felt in star colors 4″ x 8″ per star. I used Crushed Coral, Teal, Aqua, Grey, Banana Cream Pie, Honeydew and Lavender. *

Scraps for details in blue, yellow, pink and black

Embroidery thread in black and white.

Stuffing beads, beans, rice (whatever you  are planning to stuff with.

Various ribbons in various lengths. I used 4 styles per star varying in length from 6-8″.

Star bean bag template (at the end of post)

  * And matching thread.

Stitch faces to bean bags, if you are nervous about placement you can stitch over tracing paper and then carefully tear it away. add white spots in the eyes with white embroidery thread and a french knot.

s4After adding details stitch of star to the back. Leave side open to add filler and ribbon.

s5

Fill star beanbag.

Stack ribbons with the smallest on the top.

s6s7

Tuck the ribbons inside and stitch closed with a running stitch.  Repeat with the remaining stars.

Felt Beach Ball Toys

31 Jul

ballsWe’re closing out our July Seaside theme with these great little felt beach balls. Super soft and indoor safe these DIY felt toys stitch together easily. The addition of a jingle ball makes this toy at least 9000x more charming.

You will need:

7.5″ x 7″ Felt in White*

2.5″ x 7″ scrap of 3 other colors, I used Aqua, Hot Pink, and Sunshine

Stuffing

Jingle bell noisemaker (Optional)

*matching thread

Cut 3 ball pieces from ball template (below) in white and one each of the remaining color. Cut 2 dot pieces for the center from color of your choice.  Lay a white piece and a color piece together and overcast stitch around one of the edges. You will be turning this inside out so keep the knot on top. Set aside and repeat with remaining pieces sewing white to color.

Lay the felt pieces together with outsides facing in and stitch the colored sides to white sides.  Leave the end pieces a little open on one side to turn it right side out. Turn right side out and stuff, add noisemaker to your toy if desired. Since this is a soft ball it will hold it’s shape better if it is well stuffed.

Sew center closed and cap stitch the beach ball accent to the center. Roll the ball in your hands to distribute the stuffing more evenly to get the ball shaped correctly.

DIY Unicorn Horseshoes

24 May

uni

Yes, I know it would technically be unicorn shoes but I took some creative licence for clarity. I wouldn’t want you clicking on a link excited to see shoes with unicorns on them or even shoes FOR your unicorn. So really, I did this for you.

No matter what you want to call this, this easy DIY project goes together super quickly and makes a great everyday toy for all ages but it would make a magical game for any Unicorn themed birthday party.  It’s easier than you think to make the stand and unicorn shoes even for a beginner.

build

Let’s start with the DIY horseshoe stand. For this make a quick trip to the hardware store.  You may have some of these things in your home already. You will need an electric screwdriver and phillips head bit, a 1/8″ drill bit that fits into that screwdriver,  1 – #10, 2″ wood screw, a 1″ thick dowel, something to cut it down with a simple handsaw will do the trick, and a wood post cap, these are sold by the decorative wood pieces, table legs etc. and lightly colored spray paint, this will be your base coat to help the decorative acrylic paints stick to the wood.

You will also need some acrylic craft paints in colors of your choosing, I used a light blue, pearl white, and  hot pink. I also mixed the pink with blue to get a purple tone.

Once your dowel is cut down use the drill bit to carefully drill a hole in the center of the cut end, if you skip this step it will be nearly impossible to get the screw into the dowel.

Place the cap onto the dowel and screw into place.

screwin

Spray your stand to give it the colors an even base to stick to without peeling.

paint

From here you will want to paint your stand using acrylic paint . This is kind of just trial and error but after a few tries here are some tips, start by blotting colors into each other as a base then go over with a brush in upward or downward streaks to create motion. Dot with clusters of stars and swirls of pearl toned white. (more pics at the end)

Onto the unicorn horseshoes…need

Glowing Ghost Finger Puppets

10 Sep

Glowing Ghost felt finger puppets

You know that feeling of being completely overwhelmed by the wonderfully endless possibilities of life, before you lies hundreds nay thousands of possible adventures just dying for you to pick which to take on first?

When there don’t seem to be any wrong choices, the euphoria of the sheer maze of wonderful possibilities is nearly audible making the decision of which avenue you’ll explore that much more difficult?   Oh did I say life I meant Glo Felt.

That’s what happens when you stock or order Glo Felt.

gho

What’s Glo Felt? Why it’s felt made from thousands of synthetic polyester fibers that absorb the sun and glow for nearly an hour with a charge of 10 minutes, that’s what. That’s right the felt is literally made of glowing fibers that won’t rub off or lose their glowing mojo. Yeah I know. I’ll let that one sink in for you.

So I sketched out at least 20 different plans for these awesome felt squares but this was one of my first and one of my favorites. Like all of our projects these ghost finger puppets are super easy to make and are made to be loved. Best of all you can whip these little guys up in no time flat.

gho1

For 2-3 ghosts you will need:

Glo Felt and matching thread

Big eye sewing needle, I like these

Scissors

Black embroidery thread

Template (at the end of post)

Step 1:

Cut out 2 each of the ghost templates from the felt sheet. Save all the scraps they are great for gluing or sewing onto other projects for things like windows or spooky eyes.

gho2

Step 2:

Stitch faces onto one side of the ghost templates with  about three strands of the black embroidery thread. It’s helpful to lightly trace them out in pencil first.

gho4

Leave the bottom open for fingers.

Step 3:

Place two pieces together and overcast stitch over the edges leaving the bottom open.

gho5

Step 4:

Be spooky.

*Pairs well with bed sheet forts and ghost stories.
