3 Little Birds – DIY felt ornaments

Felt ornaments are more than just a great way to decorate your home for the holidays they also make amazing handmade memories for your friends and family for holidays to come. I never get tired of creating customized DIY felt ornaments, not only can these little sewing projects be crafted up in a single afternoon but the ability to personalize them is limitless. Making each one a unique and personal gift.

In the spirit of happy memories these 3 little birds are a sweet reminder that every little thing is going to be alright. The pattern for these 3 little birds in with a sunny 70s orange aesthetic can also be done in pastels, or neons or just about any color that makes your heart happy.

You will need:

Felt for each bird body (Egg Yolk, Auburn, Mustard, Sweet Potato, Saddle Brown, Monarch Butterfly) *

Felt for each bird tail ( Mustard, Sweet Potato, Saddle Brown) *

Felt for each bird wing (Egg Yolk, Auburn, Saddle Brown) *

Scrap felt for feet, beak and eye (Saddle Brown) *

Stuffing

Felt or fabric glue (optional)

*Matching thread

Cut:

For each bird – 2 bird bodies, 1 bird tail and one wing.

Cut one each of eye, beak and feet from brown felt.

Instructions

Sew tail to front of bird body, sew wing down along tail with a running stitch and matching thread.

Sew eye, beak and feet into place with a few stitches and matching thread or glue with fabric glue down.

Sew body pieces together with an overcast stitch and matching thread.

Stuff lightly before closing. Sew a loop through to hang.

Monogrammed Bear Christmas Ornaments

I love the sweet simplicity of this felt ornament. A cheeky polar bear glances back and the sparkle of red sequins bounces off the boxwood leaf border. The back of this diy felt Christmas ornament is left open for space to personalize with an initial and there is even a small space above to stitch a year if you wish. I’ve included the most common initials but if yours isn’t among the four just print out your desired letter at about 200 point.

You will need:

Felt

 6″ x 9″ Grey felt *

4″ x 4″ felt scrap in red I used Poinsettia *

4′ x 5″ green felt scrap – I used Sea Glass

4″ x 5″  Antique White felt scrap *

*Matching thread

Brown thread

Red Sequins I used Classic Red

Black Cross Stitch or Embroidery Thread.

4″ ribbon to hang.

Cut:

2 oval shapes from grey felt, 1 polar bear from white felt, letter from red felt and 40 boxwood leaves from muted green felt. Don’t let the amount of leaves or their small size intimidate you. They are super small and you don’t need a template so these cut out much easier and faster than you might suspect.

Mark out areas where the boxwood leaves will be. Sew polar bear down with white thread. Add accent areas like the tail, ears and shoulder in white thread. Sew a french knot for the bears eye using black cross stitch thread and stitch over the nose area. For tips on these stitches see our  post on stitches. HERE

Layout boxwood leaves 10 on each end 5 going one direction 5 the other as shown.

Stitch down with brown thread.

Attach sequins to center of boxwood border, 1 on the top, 3 along the bottom with matching thread.

Repeat the process on the other felt oval shape using the letter instead of the bear shape. Add felt boxwood leaf border. Sew the ribbon to the top of your Christmas ornament in a loop.

Place pieces together and overcast stitch around the outside and your polar bear Christmas ornament is complete.

Magic Snow Globe Ornaments

Remember these snow globe Christmas ornaments from back in the day? I thought it would be fun to revisit them with a slightly more fabulous feel. I swapped out the traditional Christmas themes with some magical inspiration, traded the stuffing beads for sequins and jazzed up the bases with some glitter fabric. I love the way these turned out simple, sweet and full of magic. There is enough space on the base of the ornament to add year or a name to personalize the gift. If you decide to take on this idea this year please share pics I would love to see!

You will need:

Felt remnants/scraps in:

Pale Yellow – Buttercream (Swan Globe)*

Water color- Aqua (Swan pond)

Black (Swan eyes)

White (Unicorn, Swans)

Purple- Amethyst Purple (Unicorn Globe) *

Pale Green-  Honeydew (Grass)

Orange – Satsuma Orange (Phoenix body)

Pale Blue – Sparrow (Phoenix Globe, Unicorn hair) *

Coral – Crushed Coral (Phoenix details)

Yellow- Lemon Meringue (Phoenix details)

Gold glitter non woven fabric

Felt Glue

Sequins (Coral, Red, Crystal, Snow White, Flower Garden)

Clear Vinyl  1/8 yard

Yellow, Brown, Coral and Red embroidery threads

Rick Rack or Ribbon for hanging

Felt Ornament Tutorials 

Swan Snow Globe

Cut one swan couple and one of each set of wings from white felt, one of each beak from black felt, one pond shape from aqua felt and two globe shapes from the pale yellow, one base, one of each crown from glitter felt and two 4″ lengths of ribbon to hang. 5″ square of vinyl.

Attach swans, wings, beaks and pond water to one of the snow globe pieces with felt or fabric glue as shown.Stitch over the tips of the beaks with yellow embroidery thread and glue down crowns cut from glitter fabric.Fold ribbon over to make a loop and sandwich ribbon between the two globe pieces and cover with a slightly larger vinyl piece. Using matching thread and a running stitch stitch around the outside and through the ribbon to connect it. Cut away extra vinyl.Fill with a pinch of Snow White and Crystal sequins and sew shut along the bottom.Glue base to front and allow to dry.  Tie small cut of ribbon to the base of the ribbon. (optional)

Phoenix Snow Globe Ornament

Cut one Phoenix, fire shape and center chest feathers from orange felt, one beak and one claw from yellow felt, one of each of the chest feathers and inner wings from coral felt. Two felt globe shapes from the pale blue, one base from glitter felt and two 4″ lengths of ribbon to hang.  5″ square of vinyl.

Lay felt phoenix out as shown and glue down feathers and wings. Glue the claw and beak into place. Accent fire shape with red embroidery thread in small free form shapes, this step is optional and truthfully you won’t really see it so it’s safe to skip it.

Place the felt phoenix above the flame and accent with a french knot for an eye. Add a few feathers along the face and chest with simple stitches and coordinating embroidery thread.  Place globe pieces together with ribbon hanger in the center. Stitch vinyl to cover, stuffing with a pinch of red and coral sequins. A little goes a long way you won’t need much. Stitch closed at the bottom and glue base into place the as shown in the steps for the swan ornament above.

Unicorn Snow Globe Ornament 

Cut one unicorn from white felt, one mane and one tail from plae blue felt. Two globe shapes from the purple, one base and horn from glitter felt and two 4″ lengths of ribbon to hang.  5″ square of vinyl.

Glue grass shape down onto one of the globe shapes place unicorn and accent with french knots for eye and spots. Glue horn into place. Place the tail and mane. Stitch a few lines in contrasting colors along them (optional) Stitch over the hooves with brown embroidery thread. Place globes together with ribbon in between, Place vinyl on top and sew down with a running stitch and matching thread. Fill with a pinch of flower shaped sequins and sew closed. Glue glitter base into place, tie a smaller cut of ribbon around the base of the hanger.

Domestic Bliss – Pint Sized Pincushions

Welcome back to Domestic Bliss Week.

Today’s free felt ornament tutorial is a slightly more modern take on the classic “tomato” pin cushion.

These guy are pint-sized about 2.5″  and are made from surprising shades like white and ice blue.

Aren’t they just the sweetest?

You will need:

TEMPLATE (at the end of this post)

2″ x 3″ Tomato  base color we used:  Granny Smith, Ice , White   Peanut Butter and Mod Paisley

Top Felt Color we used:  Orange Whip, Ice, Orchid,  White and Peanut Butter 

Embroidery thread

Sewing Pins

Felt Glue

Fingernail polish (optional)

Cut 1 large circle for the base and one small star shape for the top.

Using fingernail polish paint pins to match your color scheme.

It may take 2 or 3 coats depending on your pins base coat.

Attach a loop with embroidery thread to the center of the star-shaped top.

Set aside.

Using embroidery thread gather circle and stuff before closing, you will be covering up the top so you will not need to cover the stuffing completely.

Using contrasting embroidery thread section the ball shape into 6 portions.

Sew top over exposed stuffing.

Play with the pins until you figure out the best way to arrange them.

Remove one pin at a time so you don’t lose your chosen spots.

Dip each pin end into felt glue and poke back into cushion.

You should see a small bead at the base, this will dry clear and the build up will prevent any painful surprises under your tree.
